Taliban kill 2 Afghan police | |
2008-04-09 | |
Taliban militants have killed at least two Afghan officers and wounded another in an attack on a checkpoint in western province of Herat. The militants attacked a police checkpoint in Herat's Shindand district on Monday, police spokesman Rauf Ahmadi said Tuesday. Also on Monday, seven anti-drug Afghan policemen were killed in a gun battle with the Taliban in Kandahar province, he added. Most Afghan police are poorly trained and equipped, which leaves them vulnerable to attacks. Authorities say that more than 900 Afghan police were killed in militant attacks last year. Overall, the UN says that more than 8,000 people, mostly militants, lost their lives in 2007.
