AUSTRALIAN troops in Afghanistan have been accused of mistreating a number of Taliban detainees.
"Australian commanders in Afghanistan have ordered an investigation into alleged mistreatment of suspected insurgents," a Department of Defence spokesman said. "Australian commanders have immediately committed to investigating the allegations."
ABC radio reports the allegations were made by four members of the Taliban who were taken into custody after Australian soldier Jason Marks was killed during a battle in southern Oruzgan province on April 27.
However, the Defence spokesman would not confirm details of who had made the allegations. He said the Australian Defence Force (ADF) took all claims of this nature "extremely seriously". "The ADF has consistently shown its willingness to support full investigation into allegations of this nature," the spokesman said.
Sounds like an al-Q detainee found a way to mouth off to the press. Straight out of their playbook. |
