A school teacher was shot dead while 17 persons were wounded in a bomb explosion in two separate incidents in the troubled southern provinces of Pattani and Narathiwat early Thursday. A 53-year-old teacher was shot dead while he was driving a motorcycle to school in Pattani's Yarang district Thursday morning. Police said they believed unidentified gunmen followed his motorcycle and shot him enroute before escaping. Another incident took place at a market in the Narathiwat provincial seat when a five-kilogramme bomb hidden inside a black motorcycle was detonated by a cell phone, police said. Police said 17 persons, including a six-month-old infant girl and a 70-year-old man, were wounded by the blast. Several motorcycles parked nearby were also damaged. Witnesses said they saw a teenager drive the black motorcycle and park it near the market early this morning. The identified teenager then mingled with people who were shopping before the bomb exploded. |
