FOX News Cameraman Helps Rescue Injured Marine From Insurgent Blast in Afghanistan
2008-08-04
A FOX News cameraman helped save the life of an injured Marine in Afghanistan -- and was injured himself -- when the armored Humvee convoy he was traveling in was struck by a roadside bomb Sunday night in the Helmand province, a Taliban stronghold.

Two U.S. Marines were badly injured when the improvised explosive device detonated near their convoy. Though FOX News cameraman Chris Jackson was injured in the blast, he went back to the burning vehicle to rescue one of the Marines. "The cabin was on fire and I jumped out," said Jackson in a report filed immediately following the attack. "I went, grabbed the sergeant out of the shotgun seat, pulled him out."

#14  I don't think it's earned respect for marines. That is probably true but I think it's a gut level decision to risk your life like that and this guy had the right stuff when it was needed.

Nobody would have said a thing if he'd scrambled his butt to safety. Instead he went in. What a stud.

#13  Hat tip to Mr. Jackson and to FOX for understanding what is really at stake during those few important moments.

#11  During an interview with a Milblog, Cameraman Chris Jackson was quoted: "Unlike my co-cameramen working for CNN, MSNBC,CBS,ABC,NBC,AP, Rueters, Al-Jizz and all other ME media outlets...my employment contrat doesn't prohibit me from giving aid and comfort to the "good guys".

    Kudos to Mr. Jackson.

#10  That guy also just earned free drinks from any Marine anywhere for the rest of his life.

    Hats off to him.

#9  I watched another interview with the guy - they asked him "Why did you go back into the flames to get the Marine?"

"It was the right thing to do"

    Remarkable.

#8  If NYT or AP had been there, the only question the reporter would have asked himself was settings to use on the camera.

#7  Someone should let BO know that this is why folks in the military watch Fox News. They know which side Fox is on.

#6  Finally a news person that shows whose side he is on.

#5  Guy's been working with Ollie North. He obviously has considerable respect for Marines.

#4  Ahji Abu Adahack would have been the IED team member who'd provide AP or Al Reuters or the NYT the photos.

#3  A NYT cameraman would not havee been there...period...

#2  A NY Times or AP cameraman would have stood around until the Taliban showed up then filmed the propaganda piece.

#1  Wow. A newsman (cameraman) I can admire. Very rare.

If this were a NY Times cameraman they probably would have felt compelled to show their "impartiality" and not get involved.
