Georgia to impose martial law, port bombed-official
2008-08-08
"The president is going to declare a state of martial law within a few hours," Kakha Lomaia told Reuters. "Russia has bombed the (Black Sea) port of Poti and the military base at Senaki. We think Russia has started to bomb civil and economic infrastructure." (Reporting by James Kilner; writing by Conor Sweeney)

#14  Don't get lost with the battle.
Putin's prize is the oil of Baku.
All he has to do to win is keep it from transiting Georgia.

#13  Kinda hard to say where you'd get actual, factual information. I used to use ITAR/TASS and Novosti to supplement... ummm... other sources back in the day. Pravda was always the bottom of the heap, a notch below Izvestie, but only just.

Of the new press, it looks like MosNews is gone, which is a shame, but Komersant's always pretty good, as is Moscow Times. I haven't added any sources in awhile. Look under Russia on the News page.

#11  There is a larger port at Bat'umie in the extreme SW of Georgia but as far as the roads are set up P'oti is the most dirt route to T'bilisi or Ts'khinvali.

#4 Rob Crawford 'Yeah, if this were just about South Ossetia,'
Do you think they'll go strait thru to Azerbaijan?

#7  Nothing says, "To Russia with Love" like a few patriot missiles at the port.

Just sayin'.

#6  Aw, geez, I hope there's a more legitimate target than a civilian port and a military hospital.

What's the best English-language news source for this? Years ago I would have kept my eyes on the BBC for events like this, but...

#5  Poti is their main civilian port, and also the site of their largest military hospital. Georgian wounded are being taken to Poti.

#4  Yeah, if this were just about South Ossetia, they'd only need to move troops into that area, maybe suppress air fields in Georgia. Attacking a port away from the "genocide" is either to prevent reinforcements/rearming, or to simply punish.

Is Poti their largest port or a military base? From the sat photos on Google Earth, it doesn't look much larger than the port in Toledo, OH.

#3  This certainly would slow down a NRF coming across the black sea from Bulgaria or Romania..?

#1  It appears that the Russians intend to carry the air war throughout Georgia. This is not a war in and about South Ossetia. It is a war of Russian aggression.
