Georgia claims downing 10 Russian aircraft, destroying 30 tanks
2008-08-09
Georgia has so far shot down 10 Russian aircraft and destroyed up to 30 Russian tanks in the conflict over South Ossetia, the secretary of Georgia's national security council said Saturday. He added that Georgia's armed forces had, as of Saturday morning, lost "as many as 40 military servicemen" with more than 100 wounded.

Russia sent hundreds of tanks and troops into the separatist province of South Ossetia and bombed Georgian towns Saturday in a major escalation of the conflict that has left scores of civilians dead and wounded. Russian military aircraft raided the Georgian town of Gori on Saturday. An AP reporter who visited Gori shortly after the bombing saw several apartment buildings in ruins, some still on fire, and scores of dead bodies and bloodied civilians. The fighting threatens to ignite a wider war between Russia and Georgia.

#10  CNN is reporting Russian use of strategic bombers and ballistic missiles.

CNN wouldn't know a ballistic missile if they had one jammed up their collective asses.

#9  Clearly the Georgians are the mouse that roared, but they can't keep this up for long. However bad the Russian military is right now in terms of maintenance, logistics and morale, they're still the 800 pound bear in the region.

#8  Reset that quote to 30 armored vehicles and I might believe it. The Russians don't have "hundreds" of tanks to put into Georgia in this short amount of time. They've moved some mech units, mixed tank and BMP. They are also allowing lots of "civilians" to move south into Georgia. The Guardian, yesterday, reported the Don Cossacks moving.

Georgia only has five brigades of troops, about 15,000.

#7  Isn't it time for a UN Resolution

#6  From various sources it sounds like Georgia is taking a pretty bad beating at this point, and the US and Europe have no stomach for a fight with the Russians in these circumstances.

Well Europe never would, they'd call us.

#4  What are they using to bring these planes down? 10 seems like an impressive count, if it's true.

#3  I wonder why the Russians didn't go to the UN Security Council for approval before starting their unilateral invasion.

Has anyone heard any of our left losers (yeah Obama I mean you) complaining about that? I don't mean crying to the UN after the fact either.
