Silver lining watch: Al Franken loses
2008-11-05
Republican Norm Coleman has won a second term in the U.S. Senate, surviving a stiff challenge from former comedian Al Franken.

Coleman squeaked past Franken by the narrowest of margins: a few hundred votes with nearly 2.9 million cast. The margin appeared certain to trigger an automatic recount.

If the margin holds up, Coleman would be among the fortunate Republicans who survived big gains by Democrats nationwide.

#9  "I can't believe the race is even close. Franken is such a nutjob."

Minnesota politics are really quite simple. Get the Labor endorsement and...yer gold Jerry! Four words...Employee Free Choice Act.

#8  JohnQC:
Franken had much more money - almost all of it from out of state.

You know he has to be a whackjob when even the Red Star Tribune endorses Coleman.

#6  What do they mean former comedian?
He's playing a politician now, and I'm sure he'll be right there for the next 4 years, being a pain in the arse.

#5  With 100% of the precincts counted Norm leads by 601 votes. Franken has asked for a do over recount.

I am proud to say my town voted strongly for Colman, almost matching the number of dead people in Minneapolis who voted for Franken. Go Norm!

#4  Oops! recall = recount.

#3  So far it is Coleman by just over 700 votes. Automatic recall.

#2  I can't remember where I saw it (Jeff Goldstein's place?) but if Franken had one, it could have induced California to trump with Senator Carrot Top. It was one of the few things that actually made me laugh last night.

#1  Let's hope the margin holds.
