Amazing how smooth the ditching was, how fast they got it evacuated and how fast the ferries got there. Also the speed of the current is pretty impressive.

Popular Mechanics explains it here.

#8  I gotta say something about that guy up there, and I can sum it all up in just one word: courage, dedication, daring, pride, pluck, spirit, grit, metal, and G-U-T-S, guts! Why, Ted Striker Sully has got more guts in his little finger than most of us have in our large intestine, including the colon!

#7  I know many credit this to "Sully" and his supposed military "jet-bombing" expertise, but I think the proximity to the Onauguration is even more evident. Teh One's gentle eyes, and confident smile, surely provided the emotional lift and buoyancy necessary for the passengers to disembark safely.

#6  What's even more remarkable is that he was able to keep her straight after one engine separated. Apparently putting the tail deep by coming in at a high angle of attack, per the ditching procedure, causes it to act as a rudder.

#5  He must have been one hell of an F-4 pilot.

Anyone that flew F-4's was one hell of a pilot. A very unforgiving aircraft.

#4  I never realized how few "Successful" water landings had ever occured. Apparently most often they tumble, roll, or cartwheel after they touch down. What is facinating is that he avoided all the river traffic AND set it down smoothly. He must have been one hell of an F-4 pilot.

#2  You don't build people with the nerves of steel needed to handle a situation like this by playing strikeless baseball or goalless soccer.

Training and Character saved the day - if anyone involved had become overzealous or panicked it could have been much worse.

#1  Ferry Captain purdy damn good too, put his vessel right in the path of the drifting flosam and let it come to him instead of running the hell over it, which would have been the tempting thing to do.
