Taliban leader vows to attack D.C. "soon" |
2009-03-31 |
![]() Mehsud also claimed responsibility for Monday's attack on a police academy outside the eastern Pakistani city of Lahore, saying it was in retaliation for U.S. missile strikes against militants along the Afghan border. One year ago, CBS News security correspondent Bob Orr reported that U.S. intelligence officials were increasingly concerned that Mehsud could eclipse even Osama bin Laden as a threat to America. The U.S. recently announced a $5 million bounty on Mehsud's head. Asked about it, he told the AP he would be happy to "embrace martyrdom." Mehsud has made voluminous threats against the West for years, as he rose to his current stature as the head of the Taliban in Pakistan, and he gave no apparent specifics in his threat on the U.S. capital on Tuesday, notes CBS News' Sami Yousafzai in Peshawar. |

#18 CNN BLITZER "SITUATION ROOM" > Blitzy's femme Pert discounts MEHSUD's ability to directly attack WASHINGTON DC = USA, arguing that M. is mainly a REGIONAL-ONLY PLAYER [little or no International capability at this time]. OTOH, "REGIONAL-ONLY PLAYER" > THAT ARGUMENT WAS HOW THE 1990's CLINTON ADMIN LABELED OSAMA BIN LADEN + AL QAEDA [OKC, WTC 1, Africa, pre-9-11]. |

#15 Asked about it, he told the AP he would be happy to "embrace martyrdom." Whenever someone like Pie Head talks the talk it’s always great PR with all the #2’s. But his real target audience for his vision of virgins’ rhetoric is the “Big Picture” guys. Remember, President Obama has said on numerous occasions that he “Doesn’t want to make martyrs” out of these guys. |

#13 Wait a minute. I thought that if Obama were elected, it would be all rainbows and unicorns. Where's our unicorns? WE WANT UNICORNS! |

#11 And you are sooooo right. It will take another big attack in the United States and then we will be all the way in Pakistan. Pakistan because that is where they all are hiding. |

#10 The way this administration is going, the American people might beat them to it.. |

#9 If he is so happy to "embrace martyrdom" then why doesn't he take the first step. Simple, jumpf off a cliff; stand in front of a bus. Better yet, strap on a jacket with kabooms and detonate yourself prematurely. |

#8 Looks like quite a job for the Overseas Contingency Operation Against Man Caused Disasters. Have Baitullah and the boys renamed Jihad yet? Because I find that "offensive"... |

#5 Mehsud has made voluminous threats against the West for years, as he rose to his current stature as the head of the Taliban in Pakistan, and he gave no apparent specifics in his threat on the U.S. capital on Tuesday, notes CBS News' Sami Yousafzai in Peshawar. So that's all fine then. |

#4 Hmmmmm. I read that the Obamas are planning to pay for the White House renovations from their 'private' funds. Might want to put that project on hold for a bit. |

#3 I don't like this idea that Mehsud may replace Osama bin Laden. I like the fact that Osama rhymes with Obama. It keeps things in focus for me. |

#2 However, why would Baitullah Mehsud bother. The American people might just turn out the scoundrels, crooks, and socialists themselves. |

#1 And then, maybe, the real war on terror will start. |
