#2 It's been rather curious, over the last 30-40 years or so, to watch the general opinion of the Duke and Duchess slide, especially as stuff like this comes out. At one point everyone's opinion of them was tilted toward the "romantic and tragic" angle, but now it's more like "arrogant traitorous and self-centered, and we were lucky to be rid of them!"
About the most cutting quote I ever read about the Duke of Windsor was along the lines of "Such a decline - from Admiral of the British Fleet ... to third mate aboard an American tramp!" |
