British soldiers killed in Afghan attacks
2009-08-08
Duty. Honour. Country. And always, our thanks.
KABUL -- New attacks killed three British troops, eight Afghan security personnel and a civilian, authorities said Friday, as presidential candidates pushed on with rallies for elections in two weeks.

The three British servicemen were killed when their vehicle was hit by an explosion and small arms fire during a patrol Thursday north of Lashkar Gah, capital of the troubled southern province of Helmand. A fourth soldier remains in a "critical condition", the British Ministry of Defence said Friday.

Some 26 British troops have been killed since the start of July and the spike in deaths has revived debate in Britain about its involvement in Afghanistan and the standard of equipment available to protect troops.

Afghan police were also struck on Thursday, with a bomb planted in a road killing five in the southern province of Kandahar, which adjoins Helmand, district governor Abdul Jabar told AFP. Other attacks on Thursday and Friday killed two more policemen, a security guard escorting a logistics convoy for NATO forces and a civilian, authorities said.
