A Cheong Wa Dae staffer on Sunday admitted that inter-Korean discussions have reached "confusing proportions" following a week of speculation and reports that a secret meeting took place in Singapore to discuss the possibility of a summit. The official admitted that there is a need for the government to review the channels for such behind-the-scenes negotiations and the way inter-Korean summits are prepared.
Lee Dong-kwan, the senior presidential secretary for public relations, on Saturday promised, "There'll be neither behind-the-scenes negotiations nor secret agreement with the North" about an inter-Korean summit. He was speaking to reporters in Hua Hin, Thailand where he accompanied the president to the ASEAN +3 summit. They returned home on Sunday night. "A summit must be based on sincerity for the nation and must be helpful to progress in resolving the North Korean nuclear issue," the spokesman said. “As far as this principle is concerned, the president has never wavered." | |
