Mugabe, Tsvangirai agree on a slate of appointments
2009-12-22
[Iran Press TV Latest] Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe and Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai have met to resolve their year-long differences and agree in part on a slate of key appointments.

Tsvangirai's party, the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC), announced on Monday that if all the outstanding issues are not resolved soon, the case will be referred to the Southern African Development Community (SADC) to break the impasse.

They agreed to meet again on Wednesday to finalize the appointments of officials to oversee reforms in the media, elections, and human rights, MDC spokesman James Maridadi said after the two met on Monday in Harare.

He stated that the MDC has set a deadline of January 15 for resolving all the outstanding issues, including the appointment of the central bank governor and attorney general. If no decision is taken, the MDC will ask SADC to break the logjam, he added.

Since forming a unity government in February, Mugabe and Tsvangirai have battled over the appointment of provincial governors, the swearing in of deputy agriculture minister Roy Bennett, and the lifting of a Western travel ban and asset freeze on Mugabe and his inner circle.
