India 'encounter' policeman held
2010-01-09
A senior policeman in the western Indian city of Mumbai, Pradeep Sharma, has been arrested in connection with the killing of an alleged gangster.
Inspector Sharma has personally killed 112 alleged criminals in encounters
The victim's brother has filed a complaint claiming Mr Sharma's police team killed him in a "fake encounter".

Rights groups have long been concerned about "fake encounters" whereby security forces are accused of unprovoked killings in staged clashes.
Did he teach the RAB or did the RAB teach him?
Mr Sharma denies the charges laid out against him in this case.
"The gangs in Mumbai are now on the run. Encounters are an addiction for me. I feel bored on Sundays." - Sharma to an international news agency
Mr Sharma has been described in the media as one of Mumbai's so-called "encounter specialists" - the term refers to an alleged unofficial policing technique to crack down on crime. Correspondents say that "encounter specialists" have figured in reports of suspected criminals who have been shot while on the run.
Or shot while standing still. Or shot while laying spread-eagle on the ground.
Mr Sharma and two other constables were arrested on Friday in connection with the November 2006 kidnap and murder of a man who was allegedly a member of Mumbai's Chhota Rajan gang. His brother filed his petition in the high court. He said his brother had been picked up from his house by the police seven hours before his death.
