#2 When these guys showed up 20 years ago, I'm sure they were not exactly welcome, but the seemed to manage to take over quite handily Likely because, as with the past few centuries, the Afghan tribes really didn't care what happened in Kabul. Now that the Taliban are in the countryside, things are viewed a bit differently. |

#1 If ordinary Afghans believe their government can enforce minimal standards of comfort and decency, they won’t put up with Taliban fighters who, after all, first showed up among them less than 20 years ago in a country that had been war-wrecked to anarchy. And if they don’t believe it, then the other strangers in their midst—the Canadian, U.S. and allied armies—can kill all the insurgents they like, it won’t change the fundamental equation. I don't think so. When these guys showed up 20 years ago, I'm sure they were not exactly welcome, but the seemed to manage to take over quite handily. If Coalition forces were not there, the Taliban would be restocked by Pakistan and they would take over again. |
