Guilty plea over NYC subway plot

A New York man has pleaded guilty to terror charges in connection with a plot to set off suicide bombs in the city's subway system. Zarein Ahmedzay admitted conspiracy to use weapons of mass destruction and providing support to al-Qaeda, in a plea entered in a court in New York.
US officials have called it one of the most serious threats since 9/11. Ahmedzay, 25, originally entered a not guilty plea after his arrest in January. He was picked up with another classmate, Adis Medunjanin, who is facing similar charges. Prosecutors say the three were planning an attack on city subway lines last September under the direction of al-Qaeda that would have been similar to the 2005 attacks on public transit in London, which killed more than 50 people. Prosecutors have said Ahmedzay, Zazi and Mr Medunjanin all travelled to Pakistan in 2008 to look for terrorism training. At the Brooklyn hearing, Assistant US Attorney Geoffrey Knox said the plotters had met two senior al-Qaeda operatives who ordered them to carry out the suicide bombings. Mr Knox identified the leaders as Saleh al-Somali and Rashid Rauf, both of whom were killed in Pakistan over the past year.

#2 According to the New York Post, he was only trying to save the country from those perfidious juices. See his full statement here. A city cab driver who the feds claim plotted with a self-confessed al-Qaeda terrorist to unleash an attack on the subway system pleaded guilty today to terrorism charges -- then went on a rant against "Zionist Jews" for trying to destroy this country. "Your honor, I strongly urge the American people to stop supporting the war against Islam. It would be in their interest," warned Ahmedzay. "I am thankful for myself that I did not do anything to harm anyone, but I fear someone else might." Ahmedzay continued his tirade, saying the "real enemy of this country are the ones destroying the country from within ... I believe it's a special group, Zionist Jews, who want a permanent shadow government." During the hearing, prosecutors revealed that two al-Qaeda leaders who met with Zazi and his cohorts in Pakistan were Saleh al-Somali and Rashid Rauf, who both died in US air strikes over the past year. |

#1 Is this the same plot where the ACLU sued to prevent the police from guarding the subways? Does this mean the ACLU is going to rethink the validity of Islamic-terrorist threats? I didn't think so. |
