| #18 This is not a threat issued by one lone convert. He's pretty much articulating the official position of the OIC. These states voted, in the UN, for resolutions that demanded the imposition of Sharia speech restrictions on western non-muslims. This includes liberated Afghanistan, NATO ally Turkey and moderate Jordan. Jordan even demanded the extradition of Geert Wilders which would have amounted to a death sentence. And don't forget that NATO Secretary General had to apologize for not enforcing shariah in Denmark. |

| #14 Shipman, you're sometimes funny and occasionally clever, but this particular issue is not one to be flip about. Regulars might remember the case of Stephen Coughlin, an acclaimed lawyer, decorated intelligence officer and army reservist who was fired from his job in 2008 at the Joint Staff on the insistence of senior Muslim advisors for laying out the way in which Islamicist rhetoric and terror attacks follow pretty much to the letter the Quranic code of war. Which BTW is taught in the Pakistani military colleges and many other places in the OIC. In other words, the 'extremists' are in fact right in line with Islamic teaching on how to conduct war against non-Muslims to advance Islam. His 2007 thesis at the National Defense Intelligence College “To Our Great Detriment” Ignoring What Extremists Say About Jihad can be downloaded here. If you don't think subversion from within is a part of the Islamicist agenda you might want to read what Coughlin, an expert on Islamic law, has to say on the subject. Coughlin and a few colleagues have documented direct relationships between many of the Muslim advisors shaping law enforcement and military policy in the United States, on the one hand, and the Muslim Brotherhood-sponsored organizations on the other hand. You're no doubt familiar with the Muslim Brotherhood. It was one of the two Islamicist groups that together launched al Qaeda, among other terror groups. One of the great achievements of these 'advisors' so far has been to erase mention of Islam, terror, jihad, etc. from public documents associated with events such as Nidal Hassan's recent jihad against his fellow US soldiers. They've also achieved an environment within DOD in which military leaders are strongly pressured not to use those terms either. That wasn't an accident and it's not a trivial matter. A military and a society cannot defend against an attacker they won't identify. |

| #13 He went to school in Oakton, which is a comfortable upper-middle class neighborhood ... the kid is only one of a whole bunch of Western kids who for one reason or another have grown up alienated, irresponsible and attracted to the ideal of conflict and violence for its own sake Is it possible that these kids come from families where both parents work and they are left to their own devices? They would probably have little/no appreciation for money and just take a societal structure for granted. |

| #9 Things to note about this guy: He went to school in Oakton, which is a comfortable upper-middle class neighborhood in Fairfax County (northern VA) and now lives down the road in Centerville, which is mostly middle-middle class with lots of apartment complexes and more modest houses. He attended but didn't stay at George Mason Univ. which is a commuter school that has built a pretty strong overall program and that has a lot of faculty and students that are fairly conservative / libertarian - several of the Volokh Conspiracy members are on the GMU law school faculty. And third, the kid is only one of a whole bunch of Western kids who for one reason or another have grown up alienated, irresponsible and attracted to the ideal of conflict and violence for its own sake - in other words who have no stake in social stability. A fair number of them are becoming attracted to what they think Islam offers, a trend that's well along the way in the UK (allegedly among the upper class in particular) and that is starting here as well. The Islamicists are betting that they can subvert and overthrow our society from within. They may well be right unless we push back hard on this sort of thing, including on the CAIR claim that his group is really a setup designed to make muslims look bad. That claim is right out of the Islamicist playbook. |
