One killed, dozen injured in IHK protests
2010-05-01
SRINAGAR: Violence flared in Indian-held Kashmir (IHK) on Friday, a day after the prime ministers of India and Pakistan signalled a thaw in relations between the two countries.

One civilian was killed when anti-India protesters attacked a bus in Srinagar, and at least a dozen were injured when police fired teargas shells to disperse hundreds of stone-throwing demonstrators, authorities said. Police said the 42-year-old man was hit in the head as he travelled through Srinagar and later died in hospital.

Police detained IHK's hard line separatist leader, Syed Ali Shah Geelani, while Mirwaiz Umar Farooq was placed under house arrest.
