One killed, 5 injured in Karachi bombing
2010-05-01
KARACHI/LAHORE: At least one man was killed and five others injured when a bomb went off in Karachi's Soldier Bazaar, a private TV channel reported on Friday.

According to the channel, the bomb was fixed to a motorcycle parked near a trash site in Hindu Parra area of Soldier Bazaar. Soon after the blast, power supply in the areawas suspended. Police and the Bomb Disposal Squad reached the scene and initiated a probe into the incident, while the injured were rushed to a nearby hospital, the channel added.

Police Deputy Inspector General (DIG) South Zone Ghulam Nabi Memon said the nature of the blast could not be ascertained, as the BDS was inspecting the explosion site.

BDS Sub-Inspector Ghulam Mustafa told Daily Times that they had discovered 150 grammes of explosive material. “The bomb was planted in a plastic box covered with polythene bags. The homemade explosive was connected with a safety fuse suggesting that it was a timed device,' he said.

Irfan Kobra, the station house officer of the Soldier Bazaar Police Station, said that majority of the victims were those who had arrived at the area to attend an engagement ceremony.
