Lieberman: Strip Citizenship of Americans with Ties to Terror Orgs
2010-05-06 | |
The senator, who spoke first to Fox about this on Tuesday, referred to a 1940's era law that states that citizens fighting in a military force that is an enemy of the U.S. renounce their citizenship. "I think it's time to look at whether we want to amend that law to apply it to American citizens who choose to become affiliated with foreign terrorist organizations, whether they should not also be deprived automatically of their citizenship and therefore deprived of rights that come with that citizenship."

#8 As long as they dance around the issue of treason and dance around the issue of the unlawful combatants, I am doubtful that the problem can be fixed by giving the state even more power. Hmm; let me change that; in fact I'm fairly sure the problem can't be fixed that way). |

#7 Former Nazis [real WWII types] identified have been stripped of their naturalized citizenship and shipped home for 'justice' in the past. With due process, if the connection can be identified prior to the execution of citizenship and hid or withheld from the authorities, then the same penalty should be imposed. For native born or those who transfer loyalty after citizenship, treason would be the appropriate penalty to extract. The reason Lieberman is doing this most likely is because these miscreants are not being prosecuted for treason during time of war because everyone wants to dance around that issue of treason. |

#6 Bad idea. I want a firewall for the rights of Americans compared to non-Americans in this country. Adam Gadahn, for example, is a citizen and he has constitutional rights, including the right to be executed once he's found guilty of treason in a proper trial. I do not want to see Americans stripped of their citizenship. If you have the goods on them, try them in court. The danger of Lieberman's proposal is simple: once you start taking away rights, you encourage people to do more of that. Eventually my rights are taken away. |

#5 I mean, it's not like we need them. Is it? |

#4 Hey Joe, how about not giving citizenship to terrorists from Pakistan in the first place? Or would that make too much sense? Don't know which people from Pakistan are terrorists? OK, then. Don't give citizenship to any of them. Problem solved. Wasn't that easy? |

#3 A lot of these ideas are very scary, because they go to direct declarations either by the president or the attorney general. Who do you think Eric Holder would declare a terrorist? Rush Limbaugh? |

#2 I think there are things to which a American should be stripped of his/her citizenship and denied any constitutional protection. Terror or treason are two that come to mind. However, I think it should be used VERY sparingly and would require a super majority 2/3 vote of congress to do it. The offenses that would bring this about should be very clear and proven to be violated. Once constitutional protection is stripped away, we can pretty much do whatever we want with the offender, including hanging. |

#1 Problem with that idea is "Innocent until PROVEN guilty". What a beautiful civil rights ender, say you don't like Martin Luther King? Jut strip him of his citizenship and call him a terrorist, then ship him back to Africa? Shortest way to the Nazi Germany 2. |
