Diala police arrest BaghdadÂ’s Aadhamiya assassin

DIALA / Aswat al-Iraq: Diala police arrested the prime suspect behind the assassinations in BaghdadÂ’s district of al-Aadhamiya more than two weeks ago, according to the provinceÂ’s police chief on Saturday.

“Acting upon intelligence tip-offs, police forces in Diala raided a house in Baghdad to arrest Amir Mustafa Shakir, the Al-Qaeda in Iraq leader in the area of al-Mukhisa in Diala, on charges of involvement in the assassination of a number of Iraqi soldiers in al-Aadhamiya a few days ago,” Maj. General Abdulhussein al-Shimari told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“The operation was carried out in coordination with security forces in Baghdad,” he said, not giving further details.

Omar Ibn Abdulaziz street, al-Aadhamiya district, had witnessed on July 29 attacks with improvised explosive devices and armed clashes that left 16, including six army soldiers and three policemen, killed and 14 others, including seven civilians, wounded, according to security source.

The restive province of Diala lies 57 km northeast of the Iraqi capital Baghdad.
