Ground zero mosque site not hallowed: imam
2010-09-14
[Al Arabiya] The imam leading the plan for an Islamic center near Ground Zero rejects arguments from Sept. 11 survivors that he was seeking to build on "hallowed" ground

"It's absolutely disingenuous... that that block is hallowed ground," imam Feisal Abdul Rauf said, noting that the immediate area, a busy commercial district, contained a strip club.

Opponents to the planned Islamic center two blocks from the epicenter of the Sept.11, 2001 attacks say that a Muslim presence there would be offensive to the memory of the 2,752 people killed in the World Trade Center.

Many critics go further, claiming the positioning of a mosque so close to Ground Zero desecrates sacred ground and would celebrate terrorism.

Abdul Rauf, speaking at the Council on Foreign Relations think tank in New York, said that radicals had hijacked the debate and spread "deliberate misinformation and harmful stereotypes."

"I regret that some have misunderstood our intentions. I am deeply distressed that in this heated political season some have exploited the issue for their own political agenda," he said.

The imam refused to say whether he might move the center further from Ground Zero, as opponents demand, but indicated that he is considering this.

#17  That BBQ will occur; many times over.

Nathan's Hot Dogs will rock a putrified rag-head's soul.

Eff then ALL!

#16  I still think it would be a shame if a truck carrying pig carcasses and liquid lard were to accidently overturn and spill its load all over the "islamic center" site.

Just sayin'.

#15  Get a Priest and a Rabbi to consecrate it immediately. Then tell the Muslims they can have it, if they don't mind Allah being a little pissed off.

Except that one of the pleasures of conquest is building your own worship space on top of the conquered one, to physically embody that your god beat theirs, mojo. So that would be counterproductive.

#14  Trump offered to pay 25% more for the land than was paid for it. The governor of New York state offered alternative state land. Apparently both of these offers were refused. My take is that no way do they want to have their mosque somewhere else. If they could get away with it, they would build on top on GZ. One can be damn sure that once it is built, Jews, Christians, Wickens or whatever will not using the facility. The more the imam talks the better it is. Do you ever see someone who you just know is lying. imam Rauf is one of these people. The government doesn't seem to have a problem with using eminent domain for the rest of us. Tell Rauf, it is needed as a pig sty or whatever and to BTW phuck off.

#13  Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq and other locations are battlefields in the war, thatÂ’s for certain. None of these location are decisively strategic in this global war. This Mosque called Cordoba, or victory mosque, is a decisive point for Islam in this war. Victory to our enemy is not a white flag raised over DC. Victory to them is another Islamic stronghold inside their enemyÂ’s camp. This strategic move is so they can and will erode our nation from the inside out. This is the tactic and they are executing it well. Once they get the mosque built they will demand that we allow them to pray in the street. Then they will demand we remove all Christian images from view, remove in god we trust, all in the name of offending their god. If you think IÂ’m wrong or off the deep end just read his statements. If we object to the mosque then we are insulting god and there will be violence. If we burn the Koran we are insulting god and there will be violence. Yet burning the US flag and killing AMERICANS does not insult their god and is viewed as good. This will not end. This mosque is a strategic move and will be viewed as a victory for Islam and their war on Christians. The battlefield, like it or not, are now inside our borders. Get ready, here it comes.

#11  Right. My take is the same. If they didn't have a 'mastermind' plan for the GZ mosque, they would have moved accross town by now, or made a move in that direction. Feisal Abdul Rauf can make pretensions to want to forge Islamic-Western alliance, but his actions point to a man with an ulterior motive.

#10  Well, the muslims obviously have plans for that ground, or they wouldn't care so much.

#9  According to the Gettysburg Address, it sure is hallowed Ground. It became hallowed beyond our ability to stop it, and we never took a step to hallow it. All we can do is recognize that it is.

#8   Well 95% + of us.

Given that there are something like 1.5 million Muslims in the U.S. ... I'll let you do the math, JohnQC -- you're so much better at that than I.

#7  I've seen gas station restrooms more hallowed than any mosque.

#6  Many could assert that strip clubs and bars are far more hallowed than mosques. For example, in bars, supplicants look up to Heaven, but in mosques, they stare down at Hell.

71% of American people are opposed to the building of this triumphal mosque. We got a lot of radicals in the U.S. This guy wants to be a big man in the muzzie world. He wants to build a bridge to our oblivion.

#2  Supposing Mr Rauf's Victory Mosque gets built:

How long would it take for word getting around in the Muslim World that there's a strip club in the neighborhood of the mosque?

When that happens wouldn't the Muslim World explode in anger and demand a purge of the neighborhood, cleansing it of anything offensive to Muslims.

Not giving in to that demand would for certain endanger Americans and American institutions...

#1  Can we get some guy to set fire to a book he says is a Muslim holy book at the site? Wouldn't the ashes of the Koran make the place harram, somehow?

Sure, there'd be a backlash, even after he revealed it was some other book, or he/she could burn the Mo cartoons!
