PA to Israel: Choose peace or settlement
2010-09-27
[Iran Press TV] The Paleostinian Authority (PA) says Israel must halt its construction activity in the West Bank, noting peace and continued settlement expansion do not go hand in hand.
It doesn't look like peace goes hand in hand with anything, does it?
"Restoring the credibility of the peace processor mainly requires compelling... Israel to comply with its obligations and commitments, particularly to cease all settlement activities in the occupied Paleostinian territory, especially in and around east al-Quds (Jerusalem)," acting PA Chief the ineffectual Mahmoud Abbas told the United Nations, aka the Oyster Bay Chowder and Marching Society General Assembly on Saturday, the Jerusalem Post reported.

Abbas accused Israel of following policies controlled by what he called the 'mentality of expansion and domination,' noting such a mentality has created dangerous problems for Paleostinians.

Israel "must choose between peace and the continuation of settlements," he insisted.

The remarks come as a partial, temporary settlement freeze Tel Aviv announced in November is due to expire Sunday amid international calls for an extension of the 10-month moratorium, which, even when in place, excluded East al-Quds and allowed the building of "community centers."

On September 2, the first round of direct PA-Israeli talks was launched in Washington upon invitation of the US State Department, in the face of vehement opposition from the public as well as major factions across the Paleostinian territories.

They cite fears that the talks could end up with the Paleostinian Authority giving further concessions to Israel under pressure from Washington, traditionally viewed as Tel Aviv's guardian and closest ally.

PA officials have threatened to walk out of the US-sponsored direct talks if Israel does not extend the moratorium, but have hinted the door to negotiation remains open nonetheless.
