Self-Aiming Sniper Rifles
2010-10-04
Lockheed Martin won a $6.9 million contract this week for the second phase of DARPAÂ’s One-Shot system, which will provide direct observations of a target, measure every variable that influences a bulletÂ’s flight, and calculate the aim offset in a sniperÂ’s rifle scope.

During the projectÂ’s first phase, which started in 2007, Lockheed developed a down-range system that measured average crosswind; range to target; spotter scope position; air temperature, pressure, and humidity; and more, according to Military Aerospace. Using all those variables, the company calculated the ballistics for a .308 bullet at ranges as far as 3,600 feet.

While thatÂ’s impressive, the system was too heavy and unwieldy, and it couldnÂ’t be used with standard rifle scopes. The phase-two design will be more compact and able to operate in real time and over longer distances.

It will measure atmospheric conditions, account for the weaponÂ’s maximum effective range and include GPS coordinates. ItÂ’s also supposed to communicate with the rifle scope, informing the gun itself of the aim point offset and expected crosswind.

#11  Congrats on the Aimbot. Please invent the wallhack next, so we can spawncamp the bad guys. /OnlineSHooters

#10  DARPA may have been working on this already - last year a group got permission to come onto the local range "and measure bullet speed". Also very interested in caliber and wt. Kind of freaked when I fired off low power target rounds. They kind of wooshed instead of banged and sauntered to the target.

#9  The remote weapon system my company offers has a lot of this stuff already built into it. You just lase the target to get range and it provides an offset reticle. While it doesn't take into account wind, temp and pressure, it still provides a capability equal to all but the best snipers.

Oh, and it is available right now, deployed right now and working (in the rain, cold, dust, etc.) right now.

Re: the automated towers...that too, but there is always a human in the loop to hit the trigger button. Not to say that it couldn't be automated, but that is not a legal option at present.

#8  Meanwhile, sales are brisk on a small, imported electronic device that you hang around your neck, which emits continuous false crosswind data.....

#7  Great. A rifle that wants to kill Sarah Conner.

#4  Interesting ... some projects never die just come out of the spin cycle with a new suit.

Wonder if it's based on the LockMart 50cal robot sniper?

Wonder if its the same team that delivered some junk "combat environment ready" versions of stuff that died in rain and heat....?

I will say the price is much better this time around... much better...

#3  These will be installed in automated guard towers. I predict a lot of dead wildlife until they get the bugs worked out.

#1  YOUR FIRE COMMAND HAS BEEN ABORTED. YOUR PID REGISTRATION CODE IS NOT RECOGNIZED BY THE PENTAGON SERVER. RE-ENTER PID REGISTRATION CODE AND HIT ENTER ON THE TRIGGER GUARD BUTTON.
