20 Die in Northern Mexico

Twenty individuals were murdered in drug and gang related violence in northern Mexican that included two men and two women ambushed in Juarez Tuesday, and a grandmother and her granddaughter shot outside a prison in Tijuana, Baja California Saturday.

  • Two Juarez municipal police officers face federal charges after they fired on a student during a protest Friday, according to Mexican news accounts. Universidad Autónoma de Ciudad Juarez (UACJ) student José Dario Alvarez Orrantia, 19, was shot and wounded by Juarez municipal police officers during a student protest, suffering wounds that could require lifetime dialysis. José del Carmen May Garcia and Roberto Gomez Cruz were both charged in Mexican Federal 4th District court with abuse of authority, misuse of public service and injuries without the right of bail.

  • Armed suspects riding aboard a convoy of pickup trucks shot up a commercial center Monday night causing damage but no injuries, say Mexican press reports. The convoy passed by the Alsups Mall near the corner of Periferico de la Juventud and Hacienda Carrizales firing on shops and cars in the parking lot. Reports say two armed groups were involved in the gunfire, but that was not confirmed.

  • An unidentified married couple was shot to death in their residence Monday afternoon, according to Mexican news sources. The shooting took place near the intersection of calles Acapulco and Cayena in the Industrial district where armed suspects burst into the residence and murdered the couple in front of their children, who were unharmed in the assault.

  • An unidentified man was found shot to death in Juarez Tuesday morning, say Mexican press reports. The victim has been bound hands and feet with duct tape and gagged with a plastic bag, and had been shot six times near the intersection of calles Matamoros and Morelos in the Insurgentes district.

  • An unidentified man was shot to death in Juarez Tuesday, according to Mexican news reports. The victim was found by nearby residents after they heard gunfire near the corner of Calle Feldespato and Camino Real in the Los Ojitos district. The victim was shot and apparently thrown into a ravine. Four 9mm spent shell casings were found at the scene.

  • Four unidentified men and women were shot to death in an ambush in Juarez Tuesday say Mexican press accounts. Armed suspects aboard a vehicle pursued and fired on a Toyota sedan with the victims aboard near the corner of calles Soneto 156 and Mesa Central in front of the Mercado de Segunda in the Fray García de San Francisco district. Several spent shell casings and an undetonated grenade were found at the scene. Two other unidentified victims were wounded in the gunfire at the grocery store.

  • The Mexican news daily La Polaka reports three more shooting victims were found in Juarez, but with no specific location. The victims are said to be abduction victims.

  • Seven unidentified individuals were were found in a shallow grave near Nogales, Sonora, according to Mexican press accounts. It was earlier reported that a man and a woman were found in the La Mesa district just south of Nogales in a dried creek bed. Seven more unidentified individuals were later found in two graves nearby, all but one having been decapitated.

  • A US citizen was shot and wounded in Rosarito, Baja California, according to Mexican press accounts. The victim, identified as Donald Jonson, 30, was buying bread at a bakery on calle 5 de Mayo de in the Crosthwaite district when he was approached by armed suspects who shot at him five times. Johnson is reportedly received medical attention for his wounds.

  • A grandmother and her four year old granddaughter who had just finished a prison visit to her daughter were shot to death Saturday near Tijuana, Baja California, according to Mexican press accounts. Rosalba Peña Reyes, 42, was shot just as she exited the Penitenciaria de La Mesa where she was visiting her daughter who was imprisoned for drug related offenses. Peña Reyes lost a son two years ago who was found frozen in a refrigerator. Reports say a .45 caliber weapon and a .223 caliber weapon were used in the assault. The .223 caliber weapon was linked to eight other murders.

  • Four young women were shot and wounded while they were transporting in a Taxi cab in Torreon, Coahuila early Sunday morning, according to Mexican press accounts. Reports make it unclear how the shots were fired. Brenda Ivonne Medrano Contreras, 18 was reported in delicate condition while her companions, Jaqueline Castillo Cuevas, 21, Alejandra Meza Frausto, 24, and Guadalupe River Erika Lopez, 20, did not have a report on their condition available.

Two unidentified Mexican Federal agents were arrested early Monday morning after victims reported two men robbing taxi cabs in Juarez, Chihuahua, according to Mexican news accounts. Juarez municipal police were called to a location near the intersection of Avenida Teofilo Borunda Sur and Calle 39th where the two agents were encountered by police armed with several handguns and several items witnesses say were stolen from them by the suspects, including cell phones and cash.
