#2  China are very practiced at "nudging" foreigners, a practice that goes back centuries. And they keep at it until the foreigners kick their leadership resoundingly in the cajones. Just slaughtering vast numbers of peasants has little or no effect, it has to be about something they care about.

A good example of what gets their attention was when the British and French sacked and burned their Old Summer Palace in 1860.

But this case, of China wanting to drive the US Navy out of its oceanic "economic zone", despite international law, is going to be aggressive and persistent until lots of their submarines submerge and never surface again, my guess.

You know, their propeller suddenly snaps off, and they lose their buoyancy, descending to crush depth. Happens all the time, you know. Terribly unlucky. Must be a manufacturing error.
