| Barack Obama receives 12 stitches after being 'elbowed' |

| "After being inadvertently hit with an opposing player's elbow in the lip while playing basketball with friends and family, the president received 12 stitches today administered by the White House Medical Unit," spokesman Robert Gibbs in a statement. The president played basketball for about two hours at a gym at Fort McNair in Washington. Medical authorities used "a smaller filament which increases the number of stitches but makes a tighter stitch," resulting in "a smaller scar". Mr Obama was given local anaesthetic when he received the treatment, Mr Gibbs said. Mr Gibbs did not release the names of the people playing with the president. |
