#14  Pig farms were extremely important as a meat source between 1948 and 1963 in Israel, a lot of the secular kibbutzim had swine herds. In 1963, the Israeli government passed laws against pig farming in Israel with certain exceptions for Christian villages, and medical research animals.

#12  I've always wondered about the herd of swine that Yeheshua sent the demons into. If Pigs are so un-kosher what was a herd of swine doing there?
The best BBQ in the US is at The Smokey Pig in Phoenix City Alabama.

#11  TW tell 'em about the juice hawg farm... I mean, it's an entire new meaning to parts is parts.

I don't know about that one, dear Goldies Every Damn Where, although I've heard about salt farms... Actually, when Daddy lived (briefly) on the moshav in what was then Palestine, they grew rabbits for food, what with everyone being poor, hungry, secular Zionists (the poor religious Zionists lived elsewhere). But to protect the sensibilities of those who were sensitive, they referred to the rabbits as "zebras".

#8  "The Jewish dilemma, free bacon."

Gotta love a guy that can poke fun at the stereotypes that abound...... especially when his culture is at the center of them.

#7  We have a university basketball coach who happens to be Jewish. He was at some breakfast function at the athletic club or some such organization--maybe it was a university function. He was going through the breakfast buffet line. He came to the bacon and held up a piece of bacon with a pair of tongs and said: "The Jewish dilemma, free bacon." Man did he ever catch a lot of flack for saying this.

#6  tipover: the trichinosis argument was used by the German High Critics many, many years ago, to rationally explain why Jews refrained from pork.

However, it was later roundly refuted by Hebraic scholars, who explained that it was the swine's behavior and class of animal that made it unclean.

Interestingly, some religious scholars have suggested that a modernist reason for rejecting pork, is that swine are too intelligent of an animal, so eating pork is a bit too much like eating human.

As an aside, the intelligence scale is currently: humans, apes, dolphins, pigs. Dogs are about 13th.

#4  Many food prohibitions are/were very valid in societies without refrigeration or canned storage technology or where fuels are not available to thoroughly cook the foods to rid them of parasites. Many foods will kill you if not properly prepared or stored. Most Americans don't seem to be aware of the dangers any longer.

#3  The Jewish people say that pigs are not kosher. However, some will eat pork; others will decline.

It's the same with Muslims, JohnCC. It's just that we only hear about the Muslim seethers. The Jewish seethers are told by their community to shut up and stop being unrealistic.

#2  The Jewish people say that pigs are not kosher. However, some will eat pork; others will decline. Muslims seem to go bonkers over anything to do with pigs--you can't even mention the word pig or seething, rage, collective insanity, and violence begins.

#1  I'm guessing that the Koran just says that pigs are dirty animals or some such thing.

To me, that means to just stay away from them and not eat them.

Of course, there are those who feel that they are now going to be more holy or some such crap if they kill any pig they see and destroy any likenesses of pigs.
