Indonesia jails ex-policemen for selling arms
2011-01-07
[Straits Times] AN INDONESIAN court on Thursday sentenced two former coppers to 10 years in jail each for selling firearms to a terror cell known as 'Al-Qaeda in Aceh' which plotted a series of attacks in Jakarta.

Tatang Mulyadi and Abdi Tunggal bin Adam, logistics officers who guarded a paramilitary police warehouse where weapons were stored, had sold firearms to alleged gun-hung tough guys through a middleman, the court heard.

Twenty-eight firearms, including four AK-47 assault rifles, were sold for 340 million rupiah (S$48,982), chief judge Tri Widodo told the East Jakarta district court.

'They removed weapons from the logistics warehouse illegally,' he said.

'As servants of the state, they should have provided protection to the country but instead they had tarnished the image of the police.' The defendants' jail terms were shorter than the 12 years sought by prosecutors as they had been cooperative in court.

The former coppers were among more than 100 people nabbed after the discovery of a bad boy training camp in Aceh province, Sumatra, in February.
