Tunisian leader promises new jobs
2011-01-11
[Al Jazeera] Tunisia's president has called recent protests over high unemployment and the cost of living "terrorist acts" and vowed to deal with those involved.

Zine El Abidine Ben Ali also said in a live TV address on Monday that 300,000 extra jobs would be created in the country.

"The events were violent, sometimes bloody, and caused the death of civilians and maimed several members of the security forces," he said.

"The events were the work of masked gangs that attacked at night government buildings and even civilians inside their homes in a terrorist act that cannot be overlooked."

The comments came as Catherine Ashton, EU foreign policy chief, said that she was "concerned" about the events and called for restraint and the immediate release from detention of those nabbed after peacefully protesting.
How sweet. It should take her a while to recover from that perfumed eruption.
The Tunisian government earlier said that it will listen to protesters, after weeks of unrest over high unemployment and the cost of living left dozens of people dead and raised the tensions.
