Queensland coast expects 'most severe' cyclone on record
2011-02-02
Cyclone Yasi, category 5, will hit Queensland between Cairns and Townsville real soon now. Supposed to be bigger than Katrina was for New Orleans.

All our favorite Aussies on the Burg, stay safe!

#7  Now estimated to cross the coast midnight local time. It will be a long night. Still category 5. I am most concerned for Cardwell, just south of the eye (the bad side) and at the head of a big, open bay. Innisfail to the North just copped it from cyclone Larry a while back.

#6  Lord Howe Island should be ok, it's way south. Stunningly beautiful island btw.

Stay safe in North Qld!

#4  Thanks Paul, If I can get out of this ice storm it should be a normal trip. I won't be going North of Sydney, that's for sure.
It's hard to tell how bad it will be - the media is as usual, hysterical, but it does look really, really grim.
The Australian newspaper has a link to a guy in Cairns who is staying and Tweeting throughout, if anyone wants a personal view.
Go you Queenslanders!

#3  Grunter is on his way to Sydney and maybe Lord Howe Island. Stay safe, Grunter!

#2  Based on observations in the past hour it looks like it will be 'only' a category 4 when it hits.

However, it is (as noted above) so big that the cone of 140 mph wind could be 130 miles wide.
