Libya violence must be punished: EU president
2011-02-24
[Bangla Daily Star] European Union President Herman Van Rompuy yesterday condemned the 'horrible' violence by Libyan forces against protestors, insisting the crimes could "not to remain without consequences."
Whoa! Strong letter to follow, eh?
"I particularly abhor the violence that is being committed against people who stand for freedom and justice in Libya," he said during a visit to Prague. "I have seen horrible crimes that are unacceptable and must not remain without consequences. I condemn the violence, aggression and intimidation against demonstrators in Libya, and call for an immediate end to the use of force," he added.
"What the consequences might be will of course remain open. We wouldn't want to commit ourselves..."
Libya's government has said 300 people including 111 soldiers have been killed in protests against Moamer Qadaffy's rule, which erupted on February 15 after similar uprisings toppled the rulers of neighbouring Tunisia and Egypt.
"We are indignant today. Six months from now we will be mildly irked. A year from now we'll be back to arguing over the quality of figs."
Earlier yesterday, French President Nicolas Sarkozy called for the EU to adopt "swift and concrete sanctions" and suspend economic and financial relations with Libya, echoing proposals from other EU countries earlier this week.
Ah, yes. Sanctions. That way the kiddies can come out in the streets to protest against them.
Van Rompuy said decisions on the future of the countries experiencing the Arab revolts must be made by their citizens, but added the EU's responsibility was "to help" in what he termed a "historic change."

#1  ...but thirty years of shooting rockets and lobbing mortars indiscriminately into civilian homes, businesses, and schools in Israel will get you EU subsidies. Go figure.
