Police on high alert over Somali terror threat
2011-03-04
[The Nation (Nairobi)] Police are on high alert following terror threats by Somali militias.

Eastern provincial police officer Marcus Ochola said on Wednesday:

"We have intensified searches in bars, churches, mosques and bus parks where we are frisking passengers. Security officers in these places have been told to place themselves strategically to monitor everyone."

Those in places of worship will also be on the lookout for any terror threat.

He said security is on high alert at Muthaa in Mutumo district, Kitui, Tharaka, North Horr, Mwingi, Isiolo, Marsabit and Moyale where illegal Somali immigrants pass through on their way to Nairobi or in transit to southeren Africa.

In December last year, Eastern Provincial Commissioner Ms Clare Omolo said that the foreigners had discovered new routes to evade arrest as they enter through the upper parts of eastern province.

The police boss however said that a contingent of regular police, General Service and the Anti Stock Theft units identified these as entry points for the hard boyz adding that patrols and road blocks have been increased.

More than 500 foreigners entering the country through the northern border were nabbed and taken to court in December.

New cases have declined since then and he attributed this to increased road blocks and the arraignment in courts and repatriation of those convicted.

He called on the public to avoid going to places where security was not guaranteed.
