#5  Years of procrastination in deciding on long-term disposal of highly radioactive fuel rods from nuclear reactors is now coming back to haunt Japanese authorities as they try to control fires and explosions at the stricken Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station.

Breeder reactors utilize nuclear wastes. Japan has one breeder reactor. France, Germany, India have breeders. We have no operational breeder reactors in the U.S. Jimmy Carter put the kibosh on breeder reactors and the Congress under Reagan in 1982 starved the Cinch River Breeder Reactor program of funds.

#4  Years of procrastion paying off at Fukushima (NY Times):
Years of procrastination in deciding on long-term disposal of highly radioactive fuel rods from nuclear reactors is now coming back to haunt Japanese authorities as they try to control fires and explosions at the stricken Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station. Japan, like the United States, has kept ever larger numbers of spent fuel rods in temporary storage pools at the power plants, where they can be guarded with the same security provided for the power plant. Nuclear engineers around the world have been expressing surprise this week that the storage pools have become such a problem. “I’m amazed that they couldn’t keep the water in the pools,” said Robert Albrecht, a longtime nuclear engineer.

#3  In a crisis like this there are many unknowns and considerable uncertainty. Since the Obama administration has demonstrated nearly total incompetence in just about everything; I would take with a grain of salt anything a spokesman from BO administration says. The Japanese have reported what is ongoing and actions taken. They have been a bit busy lately. The speculation has been left to others in the news media and talking heads.
