[Ma'an] Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason, on Sunday denied media reports that its Damascus ...The City of Jasminis the oldest continuously-inhabited city in the world. It has not always been inhabited by the same set of fascisti... -based leader Khaled Mashal criticized recent remarks by Sheikh Yusuf Al-Qaradawi on the situation in Syria. Al-Qaradawi, head of the International Union of Mohammedan Scholars, called on Sunni Mohammedans to rebel against the ruling Ba'ath regime. Several Arabic-language media outlets reported that Mashal criticized Al-Qaradawi's comments. The Hamas leader was quoted as saying "I call upon Sheikh Qaradawi to make his judgments out of conscience and to free himself from the pressures exerted on him by certain sides he believes to be trustworthy." Further, Mashal was reported as saying that Sunni leaders in the Arab world had abandoned the Paleostinian people, and that Syrian President Bashar Al-Asad was the only Arab leader to offer Hamas shelter. According to reports, Mashal reproached Qaradawi, and said his remarks against religious unity in Syria hurt Paleostinians and served only Israel. In a statement issued Sunday, Hamas denied that Mashal addressed the situation in Syria or criticized Qaradawi. "We definitely deny the claims by some electronic websites about our politburo chief addressing the current events in Syria, especially Sheikh Yusuf Al-Qaradawi's remarks," the statement said. In earlier statements, the Islamist movement has said it sympathizes with Syria's people and government because both "have stood by the Paleostinian people and resistance and have always been steadfast before all pressures." |
