2011-04-08
One person and one terrorist Two people were killed in an exchange of gunfire between a security guard near the Pattani Veterans' Office and presumed terrorists insurgents on Thursday morning as Thailand's army chief visits the nearby province of Narathiwat.

The dead were identified as local veterans' affairs office security guard Vichet Boonchai, 42, and suspected terrorist insurgent Abdulromae Chaewae, 23.

A police investigator said that Mr Vichet was riding his motorcycle home after working at the veterans' office when two men on a motorcycle shot at him from behind. The security guard fired back at his assailants, injuring one of them, before he died.

The other presumed terrorist insurgent fled the scene while Mr Vichet and the wounded assailant were sent to hospital, where they were pronounced dead.

The incident took place as Army Commander-in-Chief Gen Prayuth Chan-ocha was visiting nearby Narathiwat, meeting with governors of the three jihad-plagued restive southern provinces and security agencies to be briefed on the situation.

Gen PrayuthÂ’s visit was also to follow up on the strategy of the Internal Security Operations Command which is focused on better understanding with local residents and economic development.
