UN warns on worsening Libya crisis
2011-05-20
[Iran Press TV] UN Secretary General the ephemeral Ban Ki-moon warns that the humanitarian crisis is worsening in Libya as attempts to secure a ceasefire in the North African state have failed.
Didn't we intervene to prevent precisely that?
In an interview with AFP in New York on Thursday, Ban said the United Nations
...an international organization whose stated aims of facilitating interational security involve making sure that nobody with live ammo is offended unless it's a civilized country...
' special envoy to Libya Abdul Ilah al-Khatib has been "working very hard," but efforts to persuade Libyan ruler Muammar Qadaffy to declare an immediate and verifiable ceasefire were not making any progress.

"In view of the deteriorating humanitarian situation, the crisis is getting worse," the UN chief warned.

Ban also expressed concerns over the situation in Libya's besieged western city of Misratah, where hundreds have been reported killed.

"The situation is getting very bad," he said.

The remarks come as the United Nations is holding negotiations with the Libyan regime, the revolutionary forces and NATO
...the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. Originally it was a mutual defense pact directed against an expansionist Soviet Union. In later years it evolved into a mechanism for picking the American pocket while criticizing the style of the American pants...
to halt the fighting in the North African country and deliver humanitarian aid to civilians.

The UN humanitarian coordinator for Libya Panos Moumtzis said on Wednesday that he would hold talks with the Libyan regime on Friday, during which he would ask the Tripoli government to provide security for UN aid workers to access Misratah.

The humanitarian crisis has been aggravating in Misratah, as the lone way to dispatch food and medical supplies to residents through the city's port has been blocked by pro-Qadaffy forces.

The UN was forced to pull its international staff out of the Libyan capital city of Tripoli on May 1, when its offices came under attack by people outraged at the killing of Qadaffy's youngest son in one of NATO's air strikes.
