Police also picked up 16 Jamaat men from the spot, Officer-in-charge of Shahbag Police Station Rezaul Karim said. Jamaat activists gathered in front of the press club at about 11:15am to hold a rally and form a human chain demanding quick solution for power, gas and water crises and price hike of fuel. The law enforcers resisted them as they did not take any permission from the authorities concerned for holding such programme in front of the press club, the OC said. Being resisted they locked into a brawl with the police forcing the cops to charge batons on them, he added. At least 20 Jamaat activists were maimed in the police action, witnesses said. Contacted, Jamaat Acting Secretary General Azharul Islam told The Daily Star over phone that the government has been preventing them from practicing democracy in the country. He condemned the incident and demanded immediate release of his party activists. |
