#5 Root cause: deregulation fallout from the Financial Services Modernization Act (2000). While same followed a GOP initiative - Gramm–Leach–Bliley Bill - it was Clinton who finalized it, in the last month of his Presidency. Obama employs ALL key parties who championed the Act in Oval Office discussions. Bawney Fwank supported his President. Yah, there was bi-partisan delusion that de-regulation in itself would yield an economic dynamo that would eliminate recessions. Didn't work. |

#3 That HUD program doesn't solve the basic issue is that the home loan is worth more than the house is. Until that is adjusted, the housing problem will remain. I know a couple people that this would help since they were unemployed for 9 months to a year, but it doesn't fix the basic issue that they are way, way, way underwater on their houses. |

#2 Seems a trifle compared to this: HUD to give away $1 billion to The newly launched $1 billion Emergency HomeownersÂ’ Loan Program, or EHLP, is targeting homeowners who are among the most difficult to help: those who fell behind on their payments because of job loss or unexpected medical bills...the government will subsidize the home borrowerÂ’s mortgage payments for a maximum of $50,000 over two years. After that, the interest-free loan will be forgiven over five years if she stays in her home and stays current on her payments. Deadline to apply is July 22nd. All the money must be disbursed by Sept. 30. Barney Frank fought to get this passed in the 2010 financial reform act. Frank proposed taxing large financial firms to fund EHLP, but House Republicans opposed that proposal. |
