'Missing' former Gambia minister appears in jail
2011-08-15
[Daily Nation (Kenya)] An outspoken former Gambian
... The Gambia is actually surrounded by Senegal on all sides but its west coast. It has a population of about 1.7 million. The difference between the two is that in colonial days Senegal was ruled by La Belle France and The Gambia (so-called because there's only one of it, unlike Guinea) was ruled by Britannia...
minister of information is being held in one of the country's jails after the police denied knowledge of his whereabouts in June.

Justice ministry officials have conceded that Mr Amadou Scattred Jannenh was being held in jail awaiting trial for treason and sedition.

The US-trained journalist was placed in long-term storage in June after President Yahya Jammeh sacked him from the ministerial post in 2006 after he formed the civil society movement he named 'Coalition for Change'.

Mr Janneh had insisted that the movement intends to pave the way for a political dialogue that could lead to democratic governance in the country.

rose against the movement and placed in long-term storage its leader since June.

Mr Janneh is being jugged along with an unspecified number of his stalwarts while several others including two journalists, Ndey Sosseh and Matthew Jallow have decamped the country and are being pursued.

While in prison, the former minister has been cross examined by the High Court in Banjul and sources say a judgment for the charges of treason and sedition has been adjourned to October this year.

The 48-year-old communication expert and who also holds an American nationality was reportedly seized by coppers in mufti and taken to an unknown destination.

During his tenure as minister, he was reputed for his public condemnation of the frequent disappearances of critics of the ruling regime.
