Man gunned down; cops hunt bombers in southern Thailand
2011-08-29
A man was gunned down in Yala province yesterday morning as security forces hunted the suspected terrorists insurgents behind a bomb attack that killed five defense volunteers in Narathiwat province on Friday.

Zukran E-tae, 24, was shot by an unknown number of gunmen as he rode a motorcycle down a local road in Raman district.

In Narathiwat, two security officers conducted a raid on a mountain where five defense volunteers were killed and another wounded in an attack on Friday. A combined police-military force of about 50 officers along with sniffer dogs conducted a search on a two-kilometer section of the mountain. A pre-dawn raid was also carried out, but none of the individuals sought in connection to Friday's attack were apprehended.

The group of suspected insurgents believed to have been behind the attack has 10 members who have been involved in several earlier violent incidents. They are believed to be members of the Runda Kumpulan Kecil insurgent movement in Raman.

Landmine kills rubber plantation owner

A man was killed in his rubber plantation in Pattani province yesterday when he stepped on one of three mines believed to have been planted by terrorists insurgents. Im Sichotiyakun, 66, was killed instantly in the explosion. His wife, standing nearby, narrowly escaped the blast.

The attack was reported to Panare district police around 6 a.m. A bomb disposal squad was called in to clear the scene before another team of security officers moved in, to check for more mines. The squad found two more about three meters away.

They believe the three bombs were buried at the rubber plantation by terrorists insurgents to detonate them as authorities inspected the scene.

In neighbouring Yala province, a sand suction boat was set ablaze in the early hours of yesterday in Muang district. People living near where the boat was stationed were afraid to extinguish the fire, fearing it was a trap.

In Narathiwat, two men and two women were injured as two karaoke bars were sprayed with gunfire on Saturday night. The gunman arrived on the back of a motorcycle and fired an AK-47. The gunman also dropped a hand grenade before fleeing, which later proved to be fake.

The chief of the Sukhirin district police said local terrorists insurgents had previously issued threats they would increase attacks during Ramadan and the shootings at the two karaoke bars are believed to be related to this threat.
