#3 Watched a few cases just like it. One, this poor ground-pounder shot this kid that popped up from behind the bushes in Somalia during a firefight. Had to send counsel to country to investigate. It is and should be hard to prosecute combat situations like so. Brought the kid back to CONUS, ran Courts Martial, and threw out the charges. This case has no wind in it's sails. However, there is another case open that deserves prosecution. |

#2 ...Myself, I think this is going to turn out like the court-martial following the accidental shootdown of two US Army helicopters over Iraq some years back. The USAF leadership - desperate to avoid having to actually hang two of its zipper-suited Sun Gods for not being able to tell the difference between a Blackhawk and a Hind AND trashing the ROE - court-martialled the lowest ranking guy in the chain of events, a 1LT weapons controller on the AWACS. The jury deliberated for about an hour then found him not guilty, a severe slap in the face for the USAF. I think this is going to end up the same way. Mike |
