Rebels take Iraq-Syria border post | |

Syrian rebels took control of the Albu Kamal border post between Iraq and Syria on Thursday, two security officials on the Iraqi side of the crossing said. "At noon, the clashes began. And then in the evening, we saw the Syrian flag being brought down and the flag of the Free Syrian Army replaced it," an Iraqi border police lieutenant colonel told AFP. "We saw people wearing dishdashas (traditional Arab robes) and holding guns and they were walking inside the border post. We closed the border and we sent more patrols and more checkpoints along all the border with Syria." Another Iraqi security official at Albu Kamal said the post had been taken over by Syrian rebels. Eyewitnesses also reported seeing the flag of the Free Syrian Army raised at the outpost. The Albu Kamal border post lies near the Iraqi town of Qaim in the mostly Sunni Arab desert province of Anbar. Earlier on Thursday, Anbar officials said thousands of Iraqi families crossed from Syria back into their home country after Baghdad appealed for them to return to avoid escalating violence in Iraq's western neighbor.
