#6  They were working in a spiked solution. There is no way that this would efficiently work with regular sea water. You would need a huge amount of absorbent material and the processing/transport of that would consume a huge amount of energy and $$$.

And it doesn't say what form the metals come out in. If it is ionic form then they would immediately redissolve in water, which would make it hazardous waste. Not good.

#4  The breeder reactor was a way to utilize some wastes. The Clinch River Breeder Reactor was on its way to being built when funding got pulled.
