NATO: Georgia will become member
2012-09-07
Georgia, Tbilisi -- Georgia will surely become a NATO member, NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said in Tbilisi on Thursday at a joint press conference following the meeting with Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili.
So Tbilisi is Berlin is Paris is Rome is New York...
Commenting on the statement by Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev that the 2008 war was aimed to wreck Georgia's accession to NATO, Rasmussen said that "in this case this plan failed."

"Georgia will become a NATO member, since it is the right of any state, if certain requirements are meet, and no third country can prevent it," he said. "We said at the Bucharest summit that Georgia will become a NATO member, and at the Chicago summit this year we confirmed this decision, and we have stated clearly that our doors are open to countries that carry out reforms. You are carrying out these reforms and achieved in this way a great success and we are confident that Georgia will become a NATO member."

#16  This is completely ridiculous. Georgia will join NATO the same week that Russia joins. Until then, not going to happen.

#15  I'm starting to understand why a certain agency in VA is advertising for new field personnel. It's not just a job - it's an adventure. Especially when the Spetsnaz are breathing down your back. Ahhh well, it beats boredom I guess :-)

#14  Georgia has given us significant help in counterWMD efforts, especially chem and bio.

They've earned some protection.

#13  Don't worry about this. After the election Zero promised Puttie Poot that he'd have more flexibility.

#12  We don't need to defend Israel. They are more than capable of doing that themselves. We just need to make sure they have the few extra toys they ask for so they can do their job.

And we also need to keep from undermining them politically.

#11  I don't mind defending Georgia, but do we have to defend Jimmy Carter too?

#9  NATO will defend Georgia to the last dead American. Story of our life since Wilson jumped into WWI with both feet.

#8  Israel would be far easier to defend at least.

#7  Yeah, because we did such a great job of defending them in 2008. Who comes up with this garbage?

#6  Currently yes "Obama and the dhims". The party has been hijacked by a collection of oddball groups interested in their own needs not the countries. The majority of Democrats have no interest in this current crop of leadership. I believe turnout for this next election will be one of the lowest for the Democrats. Like pulling for the Redskins. Only seniors pull for them because they are old enough to remember they had won anything. Normal down to earth leaders will change everything for them. Dog collared leaders and leather tight stone faces are out. This comedy has gone on too long.

#2  Not that I don't like Georgia and all but NATO is really unlikely to risk our big cities to defend the little nation so having them join NATO is simply asking for humiliation and needlessly provoking the Russians.

#1  Yeah, that will piss the Russians off.
