Twelve people were killed in a succession of car bombings in the oil-rich city of Kirkuk, some 250 kilometres north of the capital Baghdad, police sources told. The deaths include seven police recruits who died when a car bomb targeted them near an oil company in North West of Kirkuk. More than 50 people were injured in the attacks, they added.

Two civilians were killed and 70 injured when a car bomb went off followed by another bomb blast near a government investigations office in Kirkuk.

Two others were killed and four injured in a bomb explosion that apparently targeted the French consulate in the town of Nassirya, some 375 kilometres south of Baghdad, reported local media. Another explosion occurred near the same town's biggest hotel, injuring two, said security and medical officials.

At least 12 people were killed and more than 50 injured in two back-to-back car bombings in near a Muslim Shiite shrine in the southern town of Amara, they added.

Elsewhere, 11 soldiers were killed and eight injured when gunmen attacked an army checkpoint in the province of Salah al-Din located some 170 kilometres north of Baghdad, said police.

Three other soldiers were killed in another attack on a checkpoint in the area of Abu Gharib, west of Baghdad, they added.

Two civilians were meanwhile killed in a car bombing in a market in western Basra, some 590 kilometres south of Baghdad, said a local official. Twenty-four others were injured in this attack, Hassan Khalati, a member of the Basra local council told.

Basra has been relatively stable in recent years, compared to other Iraqi areas.

Meanwhile, three civilians were killed and 20 injured in car bombings in Shiite-majority areas in the northern city of Mosul, said security officials.
