Govt shutdown looms
2013-09-29
[MCCLATCHYDC] Republicans rallied around a budget plan Saturday to keep the government open but delay the new health care law for a year, storming toward a showdown with Democrats that looked increasingly likely to shut down the government when the current fiscal year ends Monday night.

Republicans in the House of Representatives showed unusual unity Saturday in endorsing the plan, then took it to the full House for expected approval. Their proposal would keep the government funded through Dec. 15, delay the health care law, permanently repeal a 2.3 percent medical device tax that helps fund the health care plan and assure military personnel would be paid if the government shuts down.

The Senate is not scheduled to return to session until Monday afternoon, 10 hours before the fiscal year ends. Democrats who control the Senate said they wouldn't negotiate or consider the House proposal, leaving no apparent path to compromise on either side in the waning hours before money runs out for many parts of the government not on automatic spending such as Social Security or considered essential such as the military.

#17  House passed it today. Troops can't go out moonlighting to pay for their homesteads that... say welfare people could.
They are in Combat.

What a Reprehensible Commander in Chief.

#16  ION China has opened fire on Japan + PHIL + India, POTUS Obama says the US can't intervene because we can no longer econ afford to go to war, + will have to seriously struggle to find military resourcesto fight like Thatcherite Britain did vee Argentina back in the first Falklands war, China demands the US leave East Asia + Guam-Westpac immediately unless the US wishes to escalate to a nuclear conflict.

Film at 11.

#15  A government shutdown will cause pain for the half of the population that directly depends on it and also for most of the rest, who depend on being able to get permits, to get through airports, to transfer bank funds, etc. Shut down government, shut down the economy. They (the government power brokers) can destroy us before we ever get a chance to vote them out. But if they push too hard the Tree of Liberty may get manured.

#14  Hell, if they shut down the government too long, we might grow to like it.

#13  Republicans are trying to protect military pay if there is a shutdown. Reid will block this, because the Dems want any shutdown to be as painful as possible. Same scenario as sequestration.

#12  I know that the Democrats threaten that, but will it really happen?
According to the Seattle Times, the TSA, Border patrol and VA functions related to disabilities will continue; all others, not so clear. We are planning on hitting the 401 or other investments if needed.

#11  4:15 CT on Friday:

"In the event of a Government Shutdown on October 1, 2013, the federal Judiciary will remain open for business for approximately 10 business days. On or around October 15, 2013, the Judiciary will reassess its situation and provide further guidance. All proceedings and deadlines remain in effect as scheduled, unless otherwise advised."

#10  Wikipedia has an article on it.

Clinton wanted more spending on health, education, environment, etc. Repubs wanted to limit the debt.

There was no budget agreed upon, so a continuing funding resolution was proposed, no agreement was made so the "non essential" govt functions were suspended till things were worked out.

The problem now is that the
there is no way out of the stalemate, like under Clinton but on steroids.

If we shut down, the systemic problems are still not solved. If we go along with O's spending, the federal govt will spend itself into financial collapse. Take your pick.

#9  On the one hand, I politically like this idea; on the other financial side I don't; we will go from 3 to one paycheck; my retirement check and Mrs' Ret's civil service check.

will retirement checks be stopped? I know that the Democrats threaten that, but will it really happen? We had a government shutdown before -- under Clinton? -- does anyone remember what happened then?

She opined the other night that she and others @ her place of employment expect federal workers to be used more and more as political pawns in the next couple of years.
makes retirement suddenly look better.

#6  It'll be interesting to see what parts of the IRS get shutdown; will report on that if this happens (and I hope it does).

#4  Furthermore, President B.O. has stated that he would veto such measures if they ever reached his desk.

Well, at least we've found something that will return him to his desk.

#1  Champ has vowed not to negotiate. That means he owns any shutdown. This is not '96. This is not Bill Clinton.
