| Egypt unfreezes assets of ex-PM Qandil |

| [Al Ahram] A court in Cairo has revoked an asset freeze and travel ban imposed on former prime minister Hisham Qandil. Prosecutor General Hisham Barakat had imposed the restrictions on Qandil, former housing minister Tareq Wafiq and officials at the New Urban Communities Authority after they were accused of squandering public funds worth LE3 billion. The court maintained the restrictions on the other accused. Egyptian authorities launched a crackdown on the Muslim Brotherhood after Morsi's removal on 3 July, arresting hundreds of the group's top and mid-level members On 23 September, the Cairo Court for Urgent Matters ordered the banning of all Muslim Brotherhood activities. The court also ordered the interim government to seize the group's funds and establish a panel to administer its frozen assets until appeals are held. |
