Democrats considering bill to lift minimum wage by 40 percent |
2013-11-09 |
[WASHINGTONEXAMINER] Senate Democrats, hoping to move beyond the disastrous rollout of the new health care law, plan to pivot to legislation that would increase the federal minimum wage by nearly $3, to over $10 an hour. Democratic politicians met privately Thursday to discuss proposals, including one by Sen. Tom Harkin, D-Iowa, which would raise the federal minimum wage to $10.10 per hour, a nearly 40 percent increase. It would also would tie wage levels to inflation. Democratic senators weighed the plan after being deluged with letters and calls from constituents complaining that Obamacare has cost them their chosen health care plans and required hefty premium and deductible increases, in some cases doubling, tripling or quadrupling health insurance costs. Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin ...Senator-for-Life from Illinois and Democratic Party Whip. In April 2006, Time magazine identified Durbin as one of America's 10 Best Senators,so what's that tell you? He was the first United States Senator to support the presidential candidacy of Barack Obama, then the junior senator from Illinois.... , D-Ill., called the proposed minimum wage increase "long overdue, an important economic issue and a message to working families struggling paycheck to paycheck that we can help." |

#18 it's the Senate. Unless they can get the House Republicans to go along, nothing will happen. Therefore, posturing. |

#17 You know the problem, the slaves can NEVER have what the slavemasters have. They must always stand above the slaves. |

#16 Make the minimum wage the same as Congressional pay. Give everybody the same medical and retirement benefits as Congress, then everyone's happy. What's the problem? |

#13 Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin, D-Ill., called the proposed minimum wage increase "long overdue, an important economic issue and a message to working families struggling paycheck to paycheck that we can help." More like a payoff to the unions. I wonder if anyone's explained to Dick what happens to prices (actual and relative) when the cost of labor is raised? |

#12 How many more jobs will go overseas when this goes into effect? |

#11 Cost of goods, services and food goes up 40%. Might as well make it $1 million an hour. Same effect. Cost of everything goes up by at least that much. |

#9 While they are at it why not legislate the value of pi to be exactly 3.000...? oH and reduce the Earth's gravity to be half of what it is now - Then everyone instantly weighs much less! What's not to like? Pretty much the same thing... |

#5 You could have a similar effect by moving 10 million low skilled illegals back to their point of origin. Fewer workers, higher pay. Too simple for those who lust for power. IMO, you get another 10 million illegals from this raise, P2k. |

#4 Inflationary. Will reduce the value of saved cash & cash equivalents, and the price of debt. And who has the most debt? The government, of course, making this a way of taxing the wealthy conservatives without calling it a tax. |

#3 BTW, doesn't it all reek of central planning? What's the next 5 Year Plan on the agenda? |

#1 The loss in employee compensation resulting from the reduction in working hours (full-time to part-time) must be made up somehow. Just think of the increased revenues from federal and state tax withholding and the corresponding reduction of Obamacare subsidies. |
