A gunman who opened fire on police Wednesday in the Russian republic of Dagestan was killed and a police officer injured. The shootout took place in central Makhachkala, the Dagestani capital, after police stopped a car for a routine check. The driver opened fire on police and was killed by return fire, a spokesman for the local Interior Ministry said. Two other people who were in the car fled the scene and a search for them is underway, he added.
